A subwoofer or a sub is a loudspeaker dedicated to reproducing low-frequency audio or bass. The typical frequency range for a subwoofer is about 20 to 200 Hz and below 80 Hz in THX-approved systems. Subwoofers are often used to augment the low frequency range of loudspeakers covering higher frequency bands only, such as satellite loudspeakers. With satellite loudspeakers becomming more popular and their physical size ever decreasing subwoofers play an important role in giving home cinema systems their full range sound. Passive subwoofers have a subwoofer driver and enclosure and they are powered by an external amplifier. Active subwoofers are more common and include a built-in amplifier.

Sonance Cinema Series In-Wall Subwoofer enclosures are constructed from a combination of ½” and 1” MDF for superior isolation of bass and extruded aluminium bracing for minimal obstruction of airflow inside the enclosure. Mass damping of front and back walls of each enclosure and long strand fibreglass internal damping for standing wave dissipation is also incorporated. In addition, a floating enclosure design minimizes vibration transfer to adjoining rooms. Both enclosures fit in a standard 2 x 4 stud bay and a blank pre-construction plate is included for easy installation.

Wilson Audio Watch-Dog Subwoofer II

The second generation WATCH Dog subwoofer has undergone the most radical redesign of any of the WATCH system components. Specifically, it has been transformed from an active subwoofer (with a built-in amplifier), to a passive, unamplified unit. Two considerations drove the design change: Quality and Flexibility.
There's a widespread myth that since subwoofers operate in the low to subsonic frequency range, the sonic quality of the amplifier used to drive them is not critical. Couple that with the fact that the FTC-mandated criteria for power amplifier specifications don't apply to active subwoofers—a loophole which allows manufacturers to make wildly inflated performance claims for what are, in many cases, and with no pun intended, severely sub-standard amplifiers built into their subwoofers.
