Power Amps

The power amplifier is the final component in the signal chain before the loudspeakers. It is the workhorse of a hi-fi system. It takes the low-level signal from the pre-amplifier and converts it to a powerful signal to drive the loudspeakers. It has a low-level input to receive the signal from the preamplifier, and terminals for connecting loudspeaker cables.

Because of the power amplifier's unique function, it differs from other components in size, weight and use. High-quality power amplifiers are usually large and heavy. Moreover, the power amplifier is the component you don't need to touch and adjust. Consequently, power amplifiers are often placed on the floor near the loudspeakers rather than in an equipment rack.

STEREO POWER AMPLIFIER:
A power amplifier with two audio channels (left and right) in one chassis.

MONOBLOCK POWER AMPLIFIER:
A power amplifier with only one audio channel per chassis. Two monoblocks are required for stereo reproduction.

The MPA-502 is an incredible five-channel power amplifier with an impressive heritage. Introduced as the MPA-500 in 1992, it became the power amplifier that was utilized to assist in writing THX's original amplifier specification. Based on an audiophile configuration, where a mammoth power supply resides in its own chassis (MPS-502) independent of the chassis housing the five amplifier modules, the MPA-502 is the most powerful multi-channel power amplifier in the world. In fact, when operating on a standard 115V AC outlet, you cannot even force the amplifier into clipping because to do so requires 28 amperes of wall current. The MPA-502 incorporates a 2500 Watt custom torroidal power supply in combination with 500,000µF of capacitance. This huge power reservoir ensures that the MPA-502 has plenty of punch for even the most dramatic scenes. Suffice it to say, that the MPA-502 is as good as it gets.
