This shines on\na photocell which generates an electrical current, directly mirroring the passage\nof the stylus through the analogue groove. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nTraditional MM\/MCs are velocitysensitive\ndevices whose voltage output increases with groove excursion and\nincreasing signal frequency. By contrast, DS Audio’s photo-electric conversion\nis sensitive only to the amplitude of the movement of the stylus. Nevertheless,\nwhile this system has the potential to offer a lower moving mass – stylus\/\ncantilever\/optical plate – than the stylus\/cantilever\/magnet or coils of a MM\/MC\ndesign, it still requires a proprietary phono stage [inset picture] to power-up the\nLED and correctly compensate for the LP’s RIAA replay characteristic.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe DS Audio DS-E1,\nlike its far dearer siblings, requires a\ndedicated energiser that also provides\nRIAA equalisation [see PM’s boxout, p55].\nAll models have corresponding energiser\nboxes, but these are interchangeable.\nWhere DS Audio’s models differ is in\ncantilever and stylus type, as well as\nbody and illumination colours for easy\nidentification. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\nThe DS-E1’s prowmounted\nlamp glows green and its\nbody is a semi-matt silver.\nThis commonality is a boon when\nswapping from one model to the next\n(for retailers or reviewers!) because\nthe 8.1g weight, overhang, VTA and\ntracking force of 1.7g are identical\nfor every model.
