The preamplifier is the control centre of a separates system — selecting sources, setting volume, and passing a clean, unamplified signal on to your power amplifier. Though it does no heavy lifting in terms of driving your speakers, a good preamplifier has a huge influence on the character of your system, shaping detail, dynamics and tonal balance before the signal is amplified at all.
