Mackenzie

Originally named Disappointment for dashing Alexander Mackenzie’s hope that it would lead to the Pacific rather than the Arctic Ocean, the Mackenzie River is Canada’s largest, longest river system. Traversing 2,635 miles, it flows through a vast network of lakes, boreal forests and arctic tundra. Mackenzie’s many tributaries cover portions of three provinces—British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan—and two territories, Yukon and the Northwest Territories. Known as “The Amazon of the North,” Mackenzie’s sparsely populated basin remains one of the great unspoiled natural areas in the world.

Chicago

Every March 17 on St. Patrick’s Day, New York City merely paints a green line down the center of its Fifth Avenue parade route—a stunt easily pulled off by any city—but only Chicago dyes an entire river the perfect shade of emerald green to honor Irish culture. Why green? Thanks to Ireland’s lush vegetation, the island is often lovingly referred to as the Emerald Isle. To the Irish, a green display of pride is not to be taken lightly. In the United States, even those of non-Irish descent know to wear green clothing on St. Patrick’s Day, or else be playfully pinched by an Irish friend or colleague! But it’s one thing to don a green shirt or tie, another thing altogether to transform a 156-mile long river. Chicago’s Stephen M. Bailey, the man who orchestrated the transformation, boasted that he’d turn the River Chicago into the River Shannon (Ireland’s longest) for a day, and, eventually, he did. There was no specific recipe for successfully dyeing a river. A bit of trial and error was required. Initially, over 100 pounds of dye was used, and the river stayed green for a week! In the second year, 50 pounds of dye kept the river green for three full days. In the third year, it was found that using 25 pounds of dye would turn the river green for a single day. Two years later, environmental concerns led to the formation of a new vegetable-based dye that produces a perfect sea of green and lasts for four or five hours—40 pounds of the stuff does the trick. Following suit across the nation, major canals, minor creeks, city blocks, drinking fountains, and even the Presidential Fountain at the White House are dyed green for St. Patrick’s Day—all thanks to the wonderful example set in Chicago.

Wild Blue Yonder

For Wild Blue Yonder to exceed the performance of Sky we increased the diameter of the FEP Air-Tube Insulation by 32%, thus creating greater space around the solid Perfect-Surface Silver Conductors. The Noise-Dissipation System increases from a 5-layer system found in Sky to a 7-Layer System. But to go even further, new techniques and materials needed to be used for the construction of the connectors. Custom-machined Direct-Silver Plated Pure-Copper connectors are Cold-Welded to insure a low-distortion contact between the cable and component.

Wind

In the simplest sense, wind is air in motion produced by the uneven heating of the Earth’s surface by the sun. Because our planet is made of various land and water formations, from the severe heights of K2 to the placid Chicago River, it absorbs the sun’s radiation unevenly, creating differences in air pressure and the ensuing movement of air from high-pressure areas to lower ones. Wind is also one of our most valuable natural resources: As an alternative to fossil fuels, wind is plentiful, renewable, widely distributed, clean, produces no greenhouse gas emissions, and uses little land. While wind power may be more important today than ever before, it is by no means a new concept. Representations of ships under sail date as far back as 5500 B.C., while windmills may have been first used in Persia in 200 B.C. Among the classical elements, wind’s close relative, air, is pure, powerful, and fundamentally important to life. In Japanese philosophy, wind is a symbol of all things that grow, expand, and enjoy freedom of movement, in some ways best represented by the human mind. People born under the astrological signs of Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius are thought to have dominant air personalities, marked by kindness and social grace. Of course, wind itself may be the most graceful of all elements. It fans the flames of our deepest passions, dances atop the surfaces of our longest rivers, sings in the rustling of the largest leaves, and carves its initials into our mightiest rocks. The physical effect is often astounding: From the forever-swirling formations of Coyote Buttes in Utah, to the sculpted cypress trees seemingly frozen in time along California’s coast, wind holds a place as one of nature’s most masterful artists.

Earth

Consider this simple fact: Even the smallest flowers crack concrete. It’s enough to make one wonder what might happen if the Earth were freed from humankind’s influence and simply left to its own devices—to regenerate, blossom, and grow wild. What wonders might spring from its soil? Scientists speculate that it would take only a century or two to wipe away the plants, crops, and animal species so carefully fashioned by humankind’s industrious hand. In a few thousand years, the world might look exactly as it did before humanity came along: a wilderness. Take, for instance, New York City, considered by many the greatest city on Earth. Without humankind’s interference, the repeated thawing and freezing of spring and winter would, within a decade, shatter the city’s cement skin, allowing water to seep deep into the fertile ground below. Cracks would widen, deepen, and provide the soil from which exotic plant species, such as New York’s prolific Chinese ailanthus tree, would grow. Within as little as five years, ailanthus roots would heave up the sidewalks and course through the sewers, while native Virginia creeper and poison ivy would adorn the city’s skyscrapers. Within two decades, the water-soaked steel columns that support the street above the city’s vast subway tunnels would give way, quickly transforming Lexington Avenue into a mighty river. Coyotes would find shelter in Central Park, to be soon followed by deer, bears, and wolves. Large oak trees would cover the land, while hawks and falcons would soar through the skies. But let’s not forget: We are also a product of Earth’s rich soil, sharing even the most majestic creature’s ability to strengthen, diversify, and cultivate the land; to create a world fit for work and play, where we can share happiness and nurture life. Indeed, Earth is a reservoir of such life, a treasure chest overflowing with the elements—the rocks, metals, clay, and other ingredients—with which we build

Water

Water—refreshing, soothing, cleansing water—covers more than 70% of our planet’s surface and is the only substance in nature to appear naturally in all three common states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. We know water as the nuclei of comets in space; as vapor in the soft clouds of our blue sky; as the crystals that form the many intricate patterns of snowflakes; as vast glaciers atop our planet’s most tempting and challenging mountains; as brilliant, white icebergs drifting freely in artic oceans; as freshwater rivers that course through our land; as aquifers in the soil beneath our feet. On the molecular level, water can form large numbers of hydrogen bonds, giving rise to an unusually high surface tension and extreme capillary force, which, in turn, allows water to move upward through narrow tubes against the force of gravity—a life-giving property relied upon by all vascular plants, including our greatest trees: aspens, oaks, and redwoods. Fascinatingly, the boiling point of water is highly dependent upon the barometric pressure of its environment: Water at the top of K2, for instance, will boil at a temperature different than that of water taken from the Mackenzie River, while the ocean’s deepest waters, near geothermal vents, can reach temperatures of hundreds of degrees and yet remain liquid. According to Aristotle, among the classical elements, water held a special place between wind and earth, being both cold like earth and wet like wind, but stood distinctly at odds with fire. And people born under the astrological signs of Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces are thought to have dominant water personalities: nurturing, sympathetic, and imaginative. Today, of course, we cherish water for all that it is, and know it best as the one thing that quenches our thirst when all else fails.

SOLID 100% PERFECT-SURFACE SILVER (PSS) CONDUCTORS: Perfect-Surface Technology applied to extreme-purity silver provides unprecedented clarity and dynamic contrast. Solid conductors prevent strand interaction, a major source of cable distortion. Extremely high-purity Perfect-Surface Silver minimizes distortion caused by the grain boundaries which exist within any metal conductor, nearly eliminating harshness and greatly increasing clarity compared to OFHC, OCC, 8N and other coppers.

Wolf

The wolf is the largest member of the family Canidae, which includes all large-breed dogs, foxes, and coyotes. Wolves are known for extreme intelligence, a trait that enables them to survive in the wild. Wolves are also famous for their evocative and powerful howl, which they use to communicate with other wolves. While wolves are commonly thought of as aggressive and “vicious,” they are generally averse to actual fighting and are, in fact, often quite friendly with other dogs or humans they come into contact with. Since wolves are capable of forming strong emotional attachments, it’s no wonder that humans feel an affinity for these complex and beautiful animals.

Boxer

The Boxer breed originated in Germany in the late 19th century and was brought to the US after World War I. Today, Boxers are a part of the AKC’s Working Dog Group. Don’t be fooled by that “worried” look on a Boxer’s face. Boxers are known for their fun-loving, genial, and at times downright clown-like demeanor, as well as their remarkable rapport with children. However, Boxers are equally known for courage in the face of danger, or threat to family or loved ones. The Boxer’s innate intelligence, combined with its natural strength of stature, makes it a breed beloved by many.

Irish Red

The Irish Setter is a distant ancestor of the Spanish Pointer and is actually a mix of the English Setter, the Gordon Setter and the Irish Water Spaniel. Irish Setters are known for their friendly, fun-loving and outgoing temperament. These dogs have a natural love of exploring and enjoy a good game of fetch above all. This trait undoubtedly traces back to the Irish Setter’s breeding to be useful to hunters on foot. Irish Setters’ intelligence and naturally calm and friendly demeanor make them superbly suitable as therapy or support dogs.
