Conventional in-ceiling speaker designs can sound muffled. The fundamental reason for this is that the output of the tweeter is ‘absorbed’ by the bass unit as the listener moves off-axis (away from directly underneath the speaker). The resultant sound is distinguished by a noticeable change in tonal balance as the listener moves away.
