A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME
OSCAR PETERSON, PIANO I RAY BROWN, BASS I ED THIGPEN, DRUMS

It was 9 p.m. on 10 February 1961 and Norman Granz took to the stage of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam to present one of the Oscar Peterson Trio’s most sensational concerts.

Waiting in the wings was his protégé, the artist he discovered purely by chance one night in 1949 as he listened to the radio in a Montreal taxi, the man he would take to the very pinnacle of pianistic success. He was the man Granz presented that evening as the “Ineffable”. Certainly it can be said that Peterson played 100 notes when other pianists might have used ten, but all 100 usually fit, and there is nothing wrong with showing off technique when it serves the music.

At 9:15 p.m., the fluidity of the introductory notes set the tone for what was to be an exceptional concert, with Ray Brown giving the pulse to the melody so fittingly that Granz would say no double bass player could compare to him. The music was gossamer light and pure, the trio played with elegance, the swing was unique and the sound range extraordinary. Peterson’s every phrasing seemed to reveal his classical training.

The melodic purity and throb of the concert’s opening Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise overwhelm the listener, and soon Peterson’s Latino homage to his friend Dizzy Gillespie takes us somewhere between Broadway and Rio.

LACQUERS

THE ULTIMATE ANALOG MEDIUM FOR ABSOLUTE EMOTIONS

Vector of absolute emotions, the lacquer is a truly fascinating object of which only a few craftsmen master the cutting. Thanks to its physical properties, it is possible to cut all the finest details and textures of a recording.

Yet, the lacquers are never usually listened to since they are only used in the vinyl manufacturing process to create the pressing die.

Few people in the world have had the chance to listen to this unique medium. With The Lost Recordings collection, we offer you the opportunity to live and share this intense emotional experience.

Crafted out of aluminium and coated with a soft nitrocellulose lacquer, heavier and wider than a vinyl (14” instead of 12”) with a hypnotizing deep blue edge, the lacquer wears off as it is listened to.

Just like tasting a great wine or living the pure experience of a live concert, listening to a lacquer is a fleeting chance that can only be lived once.

The sublime and ephemeral alliance of music and craftsmanship.

Exceptional artists have been the fuel that has fired us, every step of the way. The extreme beauty of the lacquer medium required a case just as superlative. That’s why we entrusted its design to some of the world’s greatest leather craftsmen. Philippe Atienza and Pierre Gerber were those to add the finishing touches to a legend.

Handcrafted from the finest leathers used to make luxurious custom-made leather goods, each case created is a unique gem sealed by the iconic Devialet emblem.
