A subwoofer or a sub is a loudspeaker dedicated to reproducing low-frequency audio or bass. The typical frequency range for a subwoofer is about 20 to 200 Hz and below 80 Hz in THX-approved systems. Subwoofers are often used to augment the low frequency range of loudspeakers covering higher frequency bands only, such as satellite loudspeakers. With satellite loudspeakers becomming more popular and their physical size ever decreasing subwoofers play an important role in giving home cinema systems their full range sound. Passive subwoofers have a subwoofer driver and enclosure and they are powered by an external amplifier. Active subwoofers are more common and include a built-in amplifier.

Sunfire Atmos Subwoofer
The Sunfire Atmos incorporates dual custom designed 6.5" woofers in a sealed extruded aluminum enclosure that measures just over 8" tall. Utilising a new proprietary asymmetrical cardioid surround, these drivers are capable of excursions of up to 1.8" that deliver extraordinarily refined yet dynamic bass. To achieve this new Sunfire standard for small-box, high-output performance, the extruded aluminum enclosure was engineered to withstand the increased backpressures that reach up to 24.4 PSI, or nearly two atmospheres of pressure, hence the name Atmos. Backpressure is required to maintain linearity over a long throw distance, allowing the small drivers to move substantial amounts of air.
