Loewe Connect ID - The smart TV with a personality of its own

Loewe's new smart TV with a personality of its own

Key Features:
- 2,160 individual design options
- Convincing picture quality in 2D and 3D
- Perfectly networked and with unique apps
- Attractive set-up options

The new Loewe Connect ID, with its combination of sensible innovations and individual design (ID), is virtually unrivalled among smart TVs. The Connect ID can actually be designed to reflect the ideas and the personality of its owner. The new Connect ID family from Loewe is available in two technical versions (with or without the integrated DR+ hard disk recorder) and with three different screen sizes (Loewe Connect ID 32, Loewe Connect ID 40 and Loewe Connect ID 46), twelve different colour combinations and 30 unique set-up options. That makes a total 2,160 Connect ID televisions, each with a different character. The choice of Black, White, Silver, Beige, Green or Orange housing colours and of High Gloss White or High Gloss Black frames allows the Connect ID to blend perfectly into either a classically elegant or an assertively progressive living environment and match the owner’s personal lifestyle. However, not only is the design convincing – the equipment inside the Connect ID flat TVs also leaves nothing to be desired. For example, all three screen sizes offer a convincing 3D experience. Other outstanding features of the new Loewe Connect ID are its excellent audio quality and an unlimited multimedia offering, with unique apps.

Linn Wins Queen's Award for Enterprise in Innovation

Linn Wins Queen's Award for Enterprise in Innovation

Linn has been awarded the most prestigious accolade available to UK businesses: the Queen's Award for Enterprise.

Linn's award in the Innovation category celebrates the success of our digital streaming technology - Linn DS.

Approved by Her Majesty The Queen following the recommendation of the Prime Minister, the Queen's Award for Innovation recognises the engineering prowess and passion for music embodied within Linn's industry-leading range of DS systems.

A royal connection

Awarded the Royal Warrant in 2002 as providers of entertainment systems to the Royal Household, winning this award for innovation exactly a decade later is especially pleasing.

From the birth of the Sondek LP12 40 years ago to the development of Linn's latest digital stream players, they have never been afraid to think differently.

Linn's success with 24-bit Studio Master music recordings led Gramophone magazine to name them Label of the Year in 2010, with their editor James Jolly praising Linn Records as "the very model of a modern record company".

The future of music

Gilad Tiefenbrun, Linn's Managing Director, is delighted to receive the Queen's Award for Enterprise in Innovation:

"Innovation is at the heart of Linn. We designed our DS platform from scratch, starting in 2004, and launching our first product, the Klimax DS, in 2007. Klimax DS immediately set a new performance benchmark in home music systems. Since then, we've released a full range of DS systems across the price spectrum, with all of them playing everything from mp3 to 24-bit Studio Master and making the music sound better. Our most recent updates let you play music wirelessly from computers and mobile devices, stream online music and movies, and connect everything in the modern living room through your Linn system."

The launch of DSM Systems has pushed Linn DS technology even further forward, with recent upgrades improving the audio quality of movies, games and online services such as Spotify, YouTube and Netflix for all Linn DS owners.

Find out more about Linn DS - the beating heart of every Linn system - and discover how digital streaming works.

Sonos Discontinue the CONTROL (CR200). Right Decision?

Sonos Discontinue the CONTROL (CR200). Right Decision?

All good things must come to an end. So, effective May 31st, Sonos will be discontinuing sales of the Sonos CONTROL (CR200). The CONTROL has provided Sonos customers with a fast way to play music for many years, but Sonos now feel confident that customers can control all the music on earth using their free apps instead.

With the recent addition of new Sonos Controller apps for Mac and PC, customers can control Sonos on smartphones, tablets and computers—in iOS and Android—for free. Which means you can spend the money you would have spent on a CONTROL on an extra room of music. For just £259, you can add the small, sexy, tuck in a corner, and blow out the roof PLAY:3.

Here at Stoneaudio we have always championed the use of the CR200 CONTROL. iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android devices all work great as secondary controllers but you cannot beat the speed of use of the Sonos CONTROL.  For one, you don't have to enter the passcode on your iPhone and then load the Sonos app just to mute the kitchen speaker because the telephone is ringing. This may sound small fry but when you own and use a Sonos system every day you come to realise that the reason it is so great is because its faster than every other system out there. Not so when you're using a 3rd party device! Using the hard buttons found on the Sonos CONTROL there is no quicker way to operate your Sonos system.  For 2, it's reassuring that your multi-room system has a dedicated controller that can more often than not be found on its charging cradle. Unless every body in your household has access to an iPhone, iPad etc.. these devices disappear out of the house with their owners each day, leaving the system without a convenient form of control?  Personally I think its a real shame the Sonos CONTROL is going. We have plenty of stock so whilst you still can, grab the best device for controlling a Sonos system. Order your Sonos CONTROL today!

IMPORTANT DETAILS:

The Sonos CONTROL (CR200) product warranty will be supported for two years from the date of registration.

Software updates will continue for the foreseeable future.

Hear how Linn can make everything you listen to sound better

Hear how Linn can make everything you listen to sound better

A great system should be able to play anything you throw at it: music, movies, games, everything. It should be easy to use and built to last. Find out what makes a Linn system extraordinary by visiting our new Linn lounge in store today.

If you’ve never heard music on a Linn, you might find it difficult to imagine how good your favourite song or album could sound at home. But music always sounds better with Linn. Linn's passion for music has inspired them to produce fantastic music too. They  capture the finest performances and let you download them at full Studio Master quality. From CD to vinyl, MP3 to Studio Master, play it through a Linn and hear what you’ve been missing.

Spend more time listening to great music, not fighting with technology. Your favourite music shouldn’t be tied to one computer or type of player, and you shouldn’t have to sign in to hear your own collection. Separate the music from the player? - store your music centrally and stream it in high quality to as many rooms as you wish.

It’s easy to get started with a Linn system because it works with the products you already use every day. You’ll get better sound from your existing audio sources and you’ll be able to control your Linn using the mobile devices you already own. From storage to control, from movies to games, Linn have made sure their systems will work with what you’ve already got. And what you’ll have next year. Because Linn don’t know what your phone will look like in five years but they do know you’ll still want to listen to music.

Linn make products that last for decades, not just a year or two. Linn make music systems that grow with you and adapt to changes in your life. When technology changes Linn systems don’t stop working, they evolve. Everything Linn make is modular and their open approach means you can mix and match, combine old and new. Linn don’t make disposable products and they won’t force you to buy a new system just because a new music format or service is launched. The longer you have a Linn, the more you’ll appreciate it.

Linn systems sound better and last longer because Linn always focus on what they do best: making music sound great. Everything else is secondary. If it sounds better, it is better. Just listen.

Why not pop in and see us in the Linn Lounge, we look forward to your visit.

Kaleidescape Release App for iPad

Kaleidescape Release App for iPad

Released today in the UK Apple App Store, the Kaleidescape App for iPad is the perfect addition to you existing Kaleidescape system. The free app offers the convenience of browsing without interrupting playback, so you can guide your guests through the best moments in your collection. For one example, you can filter instantly by actor, director, or genre, so that while friends and family enjoy the famous Dead Parrot sketch, you can select another great John Cleese scene.

Or just select any room to see what's playing or even start another movie. "Using the iPad app, I can see what the kids are watching no matter where I am in the home," said Denise M., mother of three and Kaleidescape System owner." I can even see how much longer the movie will play, and when it's over, I can pick something else for them to watch."

"I no longer need to be in front of the television to fully control the system," said David Daniels of Electronic Systems Consultants in Aspen, CO. "For one thing, I can be outside, by the pool, picking out music. And if I like what's playing, I can easily save it to play it again later."

"...our new Kaleidescape-designed iPad app that lives up to our reputation for simple user interfaces."
Michael Malcolm, Founder, Chairman, and CEO.

So Much More Than Just a TV: Catch Up, On Demand, Connected

So Much More Than Just a TV: Catch Up, On Demand, Connected

We have recently spent some time getting to know the recently introduced Sony BRAVIA 2011 range of TV's, In particular the flagship KDL-55HX923. Without even watching a single TV programme we kept ourselves busy connecting to our twitter account, making skype calls, surfing the internet, streaming music from our RipNAS and also using Sony's Qriocity music and video on demand service.

Most impressive was the ability to use an iPhone or an iPad to control the TV using a Free App called Media Remote. Also available on any Android based smartphone. In particular text entry becomes so much easier than having to use the TV remote. Using your iPhone or iPad you can send messages on Facebook or Twitter, find clips on YouTube and best of all easily enter website addresses.

With Remote Keyboard you can also use your Vaio notebook in a similar way.

If you've recently purchased a Sony internet TV or are considering purchasing one then please don't hesitate to pop into store to see and learn about these additional features:

Sonos Releases PLAY:3 a Compact All-In-One Player

Sonos Releases PLAY:3 a Compact All-In-One PlayerSonos, the manufacturer of the wireless Hi-Fi system, continues to lower its entry price with the release today of the Play:3, which packs a high-quality set of speakers with the electronics necessary to stream music from your PC or the internet.

At £259 each, the Play:3 is the cheapest ZonePlayer to date. While you can run just one Play:3 (as long as you connect it directly to your router), to get the full benefits of the Sonos system you'll appreciate more having at least two.

That will allow you to use Sonos's killer feature, the ability to play the same music in sync in different rooms of your house. A couple of other qualities that set Sonos apart: You don't need to keep your computer on for the system to access streaming music services. And Sonos components automatically create a mesh network to communicate among themselves. That network is frequently more reliable than your home's own Wi-Fi network.

In addition to playing music stored on a PC or Mac, Sonos hooks into a large number of Web streaming services, including LastFM, Napster and Spotify.

The Play:3 is a trapezoidal device that would fit into a shoebox with plenty of room to spare. It contains three amplifiers and drivers, two fewer than Sonos's first self-contained device, the £399 Play:5 (formerly known as the ZPS5)

We've had the opportunity to listen to both players today and there's a definite difference. The Play:3's sound felt a little less detailed than that of the Play:5 and considerably less bass weight as you might expect. But the sound was still full, crisp and loud if you pushed it. Make no mistake: Sonos knows how to engineer speakers.

The Play:3 weighs quite a bit less than the Play:5, but its the new device's smaller size that opens up some new possibilities. Because its a little over half the height of the Play:5, it will be much less dominating on a living room side table.

The Play:3 has a threaded hole on the back which lets you wall mount it. One nifty feature of the Play:3: You can set it horizontally or vertically without affecting the sound. A component within the device detects its orientation and changes the equalization of the speakers to accommodate the position.

FREE Linn Amplification

FREE Linn Amplification

This summer add 2 extra channels of Linn amplification for free when you buy any Linn Majik or Linn Akurate power amplifier during Linn’s +2 promo.

+2 means that, for a limited time, you can get a Majik 4100 for the price of a Majik 2100, or an Akurate 4200 for the price of an Akurate 2200, giving you +2 or two extra amplifier channels in each example.

Alternatively, if you’re thinking of buying an amplifier to go fully Aktiv, we’ll let you choose between the extra channels you need or free Aktiv cards…whichever saves you more money.

Why +2?
Normally, one amplifier channel is required per speaker, so a Majik 2100 or an Akurate 2200 would be enough to power a pair of stereo loudspeakers.

An extra two channels of amplification immediately allows you to bi-amp a stereo playback system to significantly improve performance. Bi-amping reduces distortion and increases separation between high and low frequencies, with individual speaker drive units powered with greater efficiency and control.

Linn's +2 promo makes it easier for you to experience the quality of Linn amplification, helping you to reach the number of amplification channels you need for less and hear the difference Linn power amplifiers can make to your favourite music and movies.

From bi-amping to fully Aktiv
Bi-amping is an easy first step along the multi-amping path (tri-amping, quad-amping) towards the audio nirvana of fully Aktiv, where all speaker drive units (bass, mid, tweeter etc.) are driven individually by their own amplifier channels and use their own Aktiv filters.

Aktiv playback systems benefit from improved timing and control, as well as lower distortion across the entire frequency range thanks to the elimination of electronic interaction within the passive crossover. Why go Aktiv?

Experience Wimbledon in 3D this Summer

Experience Wimbledon in 3D this SummerSony have been working to bring the 125th Wimbledon Tennis Championships to life in stunning 3D. Whilst their relationship has been common knowledge for some months it was only recently announced that the finals weekend would be broadcast live in 3D via the BBC HD channel.

Sony has been at the very heart of this operation, with its Broadcast division being instrumental to bringing this exciting event to consumers and whilst some other brands have jumped on the bandwagon trying to claim Wimbledon for their own, Sony has been the driving force behind this and other 3D sporting events over the past few months such as the UEFA Champions League final and the Ryder Cup.

Back to the future with Linns Majik Isobarik Loudspeaker

Back to the future with Linns Majik Isobarik Loudspeaker

35 years after Ivor invented Linn’s original Isobarik loudspeaker, breakthroughs in acoustic development and manufacturing have enabled Linn to bring back this much-loved loudspeaker design, re-invented to meet the demands of today’s discerning customer.

The new Linn Majik Isobarik uses twin ‘face-to-face’ bass drivers, mounted inside and at the bottom of the cabinet and working in tandem to produce very deep and controlled bass from a relatively compact enclosure.

Linn’s new Isobarik technology is combined with their latest playback developments, including the 2K driver array, to create a perfectly even sound response throughout the room.

An inspired new crossover design and ingenious bass mounting solution has enabled Linn to build a fantastic all-round loudspeaker which will appeal to everyone, whatever their taste in music.

This full range loudspeaker with a genuine subwoofer is well within reach of many customers. It maintains the unmistakeable musical character of a Linn loudspeaker but thanks to the Isobarik bass system, it packs a powerful punch at the low end too.

We will very shortly be receiving our demonstration pair of Majik Isobariks, so get in touch to arrange a demonstration of these magnificent loudspeakers.

In the meantime see further product and pricing information here

Sony supports disaster relief efforts in Japan

Sony supports disaster relief efforts in Japan

Cash and product donations from Sony companies globally

Sony has pledged to help families and individuals affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck the northern region of Japan on March 11 this year.

Sony Group companies are directly donating a total of 300 million Japanese yen to help relief and recovery efforts among communities affected by the tragedy.

In addition, a disaster relief fund will collect donations from Sony employees worldwide: their personal contributions will be matched by the company.

Sony is also donating 30,000 radios to assist the relief of earthquake victims. Going forward, Sony Group will make further product donations in response to local needs of the affected communities.

The Tohoku region is historically important for Sony, with a high concentration of manufacturing sites. Many employees and their families living in the region have been affected by these devastating events.

“In times like these, we are reminded of how important and fragile we are and of the positive impact we can have – both as individuals and, collectively, as a Company – to assist those in need,” said Howard Stringer, Chairman, CEO and President, Sony Corporation. “We will continue to make the utmost effort to help the swift recovery of the affected communities in the region.”

Linn 5 Year Warranty Now Standard Across Range

Linn 5 Year Warranty Now Standard Across Range

(Pictured: Linn Managing Director Gilad Tiefenbrun)

Linn's commitment to bringing the highest quality products and service to customers has driven them since Linn was founded almost 40 years ago, and their new, enhanced warranty policy further supports this dedication.

From 1st May 2011, Linn customers will automatically receive a 5 year parts and labour warranty on all new products as standard, making Linn’s warranty policy the most comprehensive and accessible in the market.

What’s more, as a gesture to customers who have purchased a new product within the last 5 years, Linn will automatically apply the balance of warranty remaining in line with the new policy, for example, a product purchased in 2008 but not registered will now automatically have 2 years of full parts and labour warranty remaining.

The new 5 year warranty is also fully transferrable between owners, so a second hand product will still be covered as long as it is still within the warranty period and the product remains in the territory in which it was first purchased.

KEF's All New Q Series

KEF's All New Q Series

A Class Above

The multiple award-winning Q Series has always exemplified KEF's conviction that new materials and technologies can, when applied with intelligence and imagination, reproduce recordings so perfectly that they sound indistinguishable from the live event. This is more true now than ever before.
As the latest expression of this design philosophy, the new range immerses you in three-dimensional imagery of a richness and clarity that until now has been the exclusive preserve of speakers costing many times more.

The all new Q Series from KEF represents a quantum leap in terms of listening pleasure. At its heart is a brand new Uni-Q driver array. Derived from the Concept Blade project, with a new, larger, high performance vented tweeter mounted at the acoustic centre of a new metal cone LF/MF driver, it combines lavishly extended bandwidth with effortless dynamics, imperceptible distortion and outstanding acoustic clarity.
These are speakers with the power to strike a chord in your heart. Off-axis dispersion is unrivalled, so everyone in the room enjoys the same exceptionally realistic sonic imaging, wherever they sit. And with 30% larger capacity cabinets for even gutsier bass and minimalist crossovers assuring deliciously fluid transitions, new Q is both more eloquent and more emotive than its illustrious predecessor. Movies or music, Mahler or Massive Attack, what you experience is the captivatingly sweet, accurate and natural live sound of the original performance.

NEW Artcoustic Modular Speakers

NEW Artcoustic Modular Speakers

Artcoustic's Modular Range - One Speaker, Endless Options

Artcoustic has launched a brand new and very affordable new modular range of speakers along with some major upgrades to its subwoofer range.

Artcoustic launched their brand new range at this year's CEDIA Home Technology Event. The new Modular system features just 4 models, but Artcoustic's typically innovative design brings endless options to the range.

The Modular Satellite is the smallest and most affordable speaker Artcoustic has ever produced and at just H250mm x W78mm x D52mm it is perfectly suited to the current trend of thin on wall LED and LCD television screens. The Modular Range also includes an LCR/centre speaker to match, a high performance subwoofer, as well as a complete 5 channel sound bar.

The standard Match colour system screens are available, but for the client to add more interesting design elements, the stand alone Modular Satellite can be upgraded with oversized baffles and printed designs to ensure they suit any system and any interior design. Just choose the size and design, and your Modular cinema system is perfect for your living space. Performance is assured with very high end 3.5” full range drive units, and a proprietary long throw 10" bass unit in the new subwoofer design.

Additional to the Modular Range, Artcoustic will also be launching a dramatic upgrade to their subwoofer range, including the popular Panel Subwoofer and Spitfire Subwoofer. New models also come in, including the unique Linax Subwoofer; a subwoofer cleverly disguised as a piece of their Linax furniture. This significant upgrade is made possible with the brand new in house designed Artcoustic high end long through 10" bass unit. These new models make it far easier to discretly integrate the correct performance subwoofer into a room.

Sonos Discontinues The Bundle 250 (BU250)

Grab Your Bundle 250 Whilst Stocks Last

Effective September 30th, Sonos will be discontinuing the Sonos Bundle 250 (BU250). Individual components will remain but sold separately at their full price. With the enormous success of the Sonos Controller for iPhone and the all-in-one Sonos S5, this bundle is not always the most effective entry point for new Sonos customers.

Sonos's ultimate goal in making this decision is to provide the very best product mix to its music loving consumers.

Whilst stocks last there is still a significant saving to be made in purchasing the Bundle 250. Typically the ZP90 is used with a Home Cinema System or Receiver so that you don't have to double up on speakers in the living room. The 2nd Zoneplayer (ZP120) included in the bundle can be used to drive speakers in another zone and if you take advantage of our half price in-ceiling speaker offer then there's even further savings to be made. more information.

Quad Release New Elite Components

Quad Release New Elite Components

Elite Audio Components take Quad to the next level

Quad replaces the highly rated 99 Series with an all-new range of components, including a CD player, radio tuner, preamp and two power amps

Quad is delighted to announce the launch of the Elite Series, a new range of audio components replacing the long-running and highly successful 99 Series, which first appeared in 1999. Like their predecessors, the Elite components are compact in size and designed with performance, simplicity and versatility firmly in mind.

The Elite models supersede their 99 Series counterparts product-for-product. The initial launch consists of five components: the Elite CDS CD player (£799.95), Elite FM tuner (£599.95), Elite Pre preamplifier (£849.95), Elite Stereo stereo power amplifier (£699.95) and Elite Mono monoblock power amplifier (£649.95). Two further components will join the range by the end of the year: a second CD player that incorporates digital preamp functionality and an additional stereo power amp to replace the existing 909.

Improving Upon a Classic
In designing the Elite Series, the challenge for Quad's engineers was to improve upon the established 99 Series without undermining the qualities that made the range so successful. Outwardly, the components are similar, retaining the midi-width aluminium casework and distinctive look of the 99 Series models, enhanced with subtle updates for a sleeker, smarter appearance.

However, the critical changes are within. A painstaking redesign operation began three years ago, with every internal component scrutinised in turn. Through an exhaustive process of modifying, measuring, listening then modifying again, the 99 Series models gradually evolved into their Elite counterparts. Throughout this process, Quad's original slogan "the closest approach to the original sound" was paramount. Only modifications that brought about a tangible improvement in sound quality were sanctioned for the final designs, with tight tolerances strictly adhered to in order to ensure perfect matching from unit to unit.

Elite CDS CD Player
The CDS enjoys significant revisions throughout, including a new transport mechanism and servo system. Audio data is regulated by a high-performance master clock to minimise jitter (digital distortion), then fed to a top-end Crystal 24-bit/192kHz DAC, which replaces the older 24-bit/96kHz chip used by the player's predecessor. The highest quality electronic components are specified throughout, with multi-layer circuit boards and Quad's advanced, proprietary filtering and control software.

Elite FM Tuner
The Elite FM is a clean-sheet design incorporating a high-grade FM stereo decoder with discrete Class A stages, coupled to Class A output stages and high-quality polypropylene capacitors in the signal path. Genuine audiophile quality is assured from FM signals anywhere in the world, eclipsing the performance of many highly rated and considerably more costly hi-fi radio tuners in the process.

Elite Pre Preamplifier
The Elite Pre forms the heart of any system in which it is placed, and a great deal of work has been undertaken to further enhance the excellent levels of musical transparency delivered by its 99 Series predecessor. This has been achieved by careful component selection and re-tuning of the signal path, whilst maintaining the advanced facilities that are unique to Quad's solid-state preamps, including Quad Link and Amp Bus connectivity (see below), bypass-switchable filter adjustment for bass and treble, and Quad's unique Tilt control that tailors the entire frequency response to suit the users preferred balance.

The Elite Pre is packed with technical innovation including noiseless solid-state signal switching and digitally addressed analogue volume and balance controls, which track both left and right channels with exceptional accuracy (better than 0.1dB). A highly specified phono stage is provided for turntables, too.

Elite Stereo and Elite Mono Power Amplifiers
The Elite Stereo and Elite Mono power amps have been carefully revised to ensure they retain their predecessors acclaimed musicality, whilst delivering enhanced punch and drive, alongside greater finesse and resolution. New ultra-low-noise transformers are used, and all power supply components have been specially selected following extensive listening tests. Delivering 2x80W and 150W respectively, both Stereo and Mono offer instantaneous overload recovery and full protection against over-driving without resorting to output line fuses or relays, which degrade the quality of the audio signal. Both amps deliver more sonic presence and impact than their predecessors, whenever the music requires it.

Elite System Concept Individually, each Elite component has been engineered to perform at the top of its class. Combine them to form a complete high-performance music system and the standard they set is higher still. Their smart, understated looks and compact dimensions are both practical and pleasing to the eye, while Quad's proprietary Quad Link and Amp Bus technologies ensure perfect synergy between every Elite component, optimising sound quality and simplifying system connectivity and control.

The Quad Link system bus is used to connect the Elite CDS CD player and Elite FM tuner to the Elite Pre preamp. It carries the audio signal in fully balanced form, plus system commands enabling all three components to be controlled via a single remote handset. Similarly, Amp Bus delivers balanced audio and control signals between the Elite Pre preamp and Elite Stereo or Elite Mono power amps. Several power amps may be daisy-chained via Amp Bus, giving the user the option to bi-amp or even tri-amp with ease. All Elite components (except the Elite FM) also provide conventional RCA sockets, for connection to components from other brands.

Every Elite component has been designed to deliver the best possible user experience. The build is solid, the controls straightforward and the sound painstakingly tuned to maximise musical enjoyment. The natural, unforced sonic scale, pace and dynamism that made the 99 Series so highly rated remains intact, imbued with even greater resolve to deliver the most captivating musical performance possible, whilst maintaining highly competitive pricing throughout the range. Quad products have always been about the musical experience, first and foremost, and never has this been better exemplified than by the performance of the new Elite Series.

Jason Greenslade, a highly experienced audio equipment engineer who has held senior positions with Arcam, Cyrus, NAD, Roksan, Soundcraft and TAG McLaren Audio, leads the design team charged with delivering the Quad Elite Series. Given the longstanding success of the 99 Series, his responsibility is considerable, yet Quad has allowed Jason all the time and resources required to ensure every Elite component surpasses the performance of its predecessor.

According to Peter Comeau, Director of Acoustic Design for IAG (Quad's parent company), the Elite Series represents the best solid-state component range Quad has ever produced. Listening to the Elite pre/power with the Elite CD player as its source I am struck by how clean, clear and effortless is the musical delivery of this combination, says Peter. This Elite system has now taken pride of place in my listening room.

The Quad Elite CDS, Elite FM, Elite Pre, Elite Stereo and Elite Mono are available from September.

Audiolab Delivers New CD Players

Audiolab Delivers New CD Players

AudioLab delivers new CD players with advanced digital connectivity

8200CD and 8200CDQ pair class-leading sound with innovative functionality, including PC/Mac connectivity and selectable digital filters

Audiolab is delighted to announce the launch of two CD players, the 8200CD and 8200CDQ. The new players are the first products to emerge from Audiolab's latest generation of audio components, the 8200 Series, sporting clean-sheet circuit design and supplying a unique array of facilities and connectivity options, including high-definition USB ports.

The 8200CD is priced at £699.95 and includes the following highlights:
* Exceptional connectivity, including a USB port and XLR outputs
* USB port can be used to enhance the quality of digital audio playback from a PC, Mac etc.
* Any PC/Mac media player (iTunes etc.) can be controlled via the Audiolab's remote handset
* USB port also allows the player to be upgraded via firmware updates in the future
* Four selectable digital filters enable the user to tailor the sound to his/her own taste
* Ultra-high-quality 32-bit DAC from ESS Technology
* Proprietary, discrete master clock ensures ultra-low jitter
* Balanced, discrete, Class A output stages maximise sound quality

The 8200CDQ is priced at £899.95 and sports the same specifications as the 8200CD with the addition of a complete digital/analogue preamplifier, all in an identically sized chassis.

While most CD players are designed purely for CD playback, the 8200CD and 8200CDQ have been created with flexibility firmly in mind. Their architecture is perhaps best described as a DAC + CD, rather than as a CD player in the traditional sense. The DAC (Digital-to-Analogue Converter) is the cornerstone of their design, which is why Audiolab has chosen the Sabre 32-bit audio DAC from ESS Technology to carry out D-to-A conversion.

This DAC solution is rarely used in CD players because it is much more expensive than other audio DACs, and players that incorporate it usually cost many thousands of pounds. However, Audiolab believes that this is the best sounding DAC currently available, so rather than reverting to the cheaper modules found in most CD players, the ESS Sabre is embedded at the heart of the 8200CD and 8200CDQ.

The provision of digital inputs optical, coaxial and USB means the 8200CD and 8200CDQ can be used to deliver top-quality sound from all kinds of digital sources, including audio files from computers and other media devices. Thus, all music benefits from the superb sound quality produced by the players DAC and discrete Class A output stages.

While most USB connections only support data up to 16-bit/48kHz, the 8200CD and 8200CDQ accept data right up to 24-bit/96kHz via USB, with bit depth and sampling frequency shown in real time on the player's LCD display. In addition, the USB link is asynchronous, this means data is regulated by the master clock in the player, rather than by the computer at the source, thus helping to minimise jitter (digital distortion).

The user can control the media player on his/her PC or Mac via the Audiolab remote, with the control signal transferred back to the computer via the USB port. This facility is driverless (in other words, it is built into the operating system) and is compatible with all media players Apple iTunes, Windows Media Player etc.

Both the 8200CD and 8200CDQ incorporate a clock-locked CD transport, delivering excellent CD sound quality. All digital music, whether from CD or an external source, benefits from four selectable filter settings:
* Slow Roll-Off (delivers a smoother style of sound)
* Fast Roll-Off (delivers a crisper style of sound)
* Optimal Spectrum (delivers a flat response and optimal lab measurements)
* Optimal Transient (enhances transient response, thus promoting sonic pace and flow)

Users may switch between these settings via the remote, thus tailoring the sound according to taste. In blind listening trials conducted during development, the Optimal Transient setting proved most popular, closely followed by Optimal Spectrum. Users may decide to stick to their favourite filter setting or, if they wish, switch between the various settings to suit different music and recording styles. New filter upgrades will be made available for users to download and install via USB in the future.

The 8200CD and 8200CDQ enjoy extremely low levels of jitter thanks to the DAC's unique coupling with Audiolab's proprietary, discrete master clock, to the benefit of all forms of digital audio. Once converted to analogue, music signals are passed through a balanced, discrete, Class A FET output stage and on to the users amplifier via either single-ended RCA or fully balanced XLR outputs. Four-layer PCB (Printed Circuit Board) construction and 34 regulated power supplies help to maintain optimal signal quality throughout.

In addition to the above, the 8200CDQ adds full preamp functionality whilst maintaining the same chassis size as the 8200CD. The existing digital inputs are joined by three line-level analogue inputs, providing source selection and volume control in the analogue domain. The preamplifier section is fully balanced and all analogue input signals are converted to balanced form, helping to reduce distortion and noise. Class A gain structures are present throughout, and users may choose between preamplification in the analogue or digital domain in respect of the digital inputs. In addition, the 8200CDQ adds a direct-coupled, discrete, Class A headphone amplifier, accessible via a socket on the front panel.

John Westlake leads the design team responsible for developing the 8200CD and 8200CDQ. Johns technical skills have delivered award-winning digital audio products spanning the last two decades and a variety of companies have benefitted from his expertise, from Cambridge Audio and Pink Triangle to Logitech and Bose. His research is also utilised by a number of market leading electronic component manufacturers, including Zetex Semiconductors and Wolfson Microelectronics.

John is convinced that the 8200CD and 8200CDQ are the finest CD players he has ever designed and Peter Comeau, Director of Acoustic Design for IAG (Audiolab's parent company), agrees. After many years of seeking a CD player that can bring me the level of musical emotion inspired by great performances on vinyl, I feel I've finally discovered, in the Audiolab 8200CD, a player that can do full justice to the music I have in my CD collection, says Peter. At last I can forget the source and just listen to the music.

The Audiolab 8200CD is available from late August at £699.95, with the 8200CDQ arriving in September at £899.95. Both models are solidly built with all-aluminium casework and are available in a choice of silver (natural aluminium) or classic Audiolab black.

The 8200CD and 8200CDQ are the first of a new generation of Audiolab products. A range of amplifiers is set to follow, forming the backbone of the all-new Audiolab 8200 Series.

Mission Launches MX Series

Mission Launches MX Series

New speaker range delivers exceptional sound at affordable prices

We are delighted to announce the launch of the Mission MX Series, an all-new range of speakers that exemplifies the company's longstanding reputation for delivering excellent sound at affordable price points.

The range consists of five stereo models: the MX-S (£119.95 per pair), MX-1 (£149.95 per pair) and MX-2 (£199.95 per pair) are standmount speakers, while the MX-3 (£349.95 per pair), MX-4 (£499.95 per pair) and MX-5 (£599.95 per pair) are floorstanders. In addition, there are two dedicated centre channel speakers for home cinema use, the MX-C1 (£129.95) and MX-C2 (£179.95).
New Mission active subwoofers will join the line-up soon. Every speaker in the Mission MX Series is designed to deliver maximum sound for minimum outlay, in a practical design that's purpose-built for modern living. Every model is specifically designed to work well when positioned close to a wall, making the speakers easy to position in typical rooms.
They are also engineered to deliver a balanced sound both on- and off-axis, aided by an integrated treble waveguide that optimises dispersion, thus ensuring great sound wherever the listener is seated.
Throughout the range, the bass and midrange drive units incorporate cones fashioned from an advanced fibre formulation, providing excellent strength and rigidity. These drivers hand over to Mission's classic 25mm silk dome tweeter via a sophisticated crossover network.

In traditional Mission style, the standmount models have the tweeter positioned below the mid/bass drive unit, in order to aid time alignment. By placing the treble unit lower than ear level, the path length from the treble unit to the listener is longer than that of the mid/bass unit. As the treble unit dome is physically forward of the mid/bass unit cone, the difference in path length helps to equalise the acoustic distance.
Similarly, the two-way MX-3 and MX-4 floorstanders position the tweeter between twin mid/bass units in a D'Appolito configuration, while the MX-5 is a true three-way design, with the tweeter sited between a single midrange unit and two bass drivers.

In keeping with the theme of practical living, every MX model has been designed for optimum performance with the drive units protective grilles in place. Traditionally, speakers sound best with their grilles removed, but this leaves the drive units vulnerable to damage. Although the grilles may be removed if the user wishes, the MX speakers have been deliberately tuned for grille-on use thanks not least to the built-in waveguide thus further enhancing both practicality and aesthetics.

The speakers sport a sharp, modern look in keeping with Mission's customary design focus, coupling keyed tonal graduations with a selection of smart wood-grain finishes, able to slot neatly into any domestic environment. All the speakers may be single- or bi-wired (bi-wiring is recommended for optimum performance) and the lower section of the floorstanders may be mass loaded with dry sand to enhance stability and provide additional cabinet damping, thus further enhancing transient response.

The result is a range of speakers that is smart, practical and affordable. Most important of all, they communicate music with engaging energy and detail, bringing performances to life with all the vibrancy and finesse one expects of Mission designs.

The MX Series is the first Mission range to be designed from the ground up by Peter Comeau and his team since Peter was appointed as Director of Acoustic Design for IAG, Mission's parent company, in 2009. Peter previously designed speakers for the Mission brand between 1999 and 2005, his work encompassing multi-award-winning designs such as the Mission 780 and 782. Not surprisingly, the MX Series has been something of a labour of love for Peter, as he explains:

Mission's ethos has always focused upon bringing audiophile performance down to an affordable level, and the MX Series exemplifies this. With the aid of sophisticated modelling tools and software, we've been able to maximise the performance of the MX Series using the most modern technology available. Yet Mission's original slogan, Music is the Master, Technology is the Slave, has never been more apt. Months of fine-tuning through listening to a diverse range of music across multiple genres have allowed us to create, from each the MX loudspeakers, a vibrant and exciting insight into every musical performance. I'm convinced that, whichever MX speaker you select, you'll want to explore your whole music collection all over again.

The Mission MX Series is available from late September. Cabinet finish options include black, cherry, rosewood and walnut.

If you are buying a new TV today this is what you need to know:
Any analogue TV can be used with a set top box to receive digital TV signals. For Freeview and digital cable, you will need to check you are in a coverage area. For Freeview, you may also need a new aerial. The TV should ideally have a "scart" socket to plug the box into.

An integrated digital TV (iDTV) already has a digital receiver inside it, giving access to Freeview's free digital terrestrial TV services - if you are in the coverage area. To receive any other digital channels you will need to use a set top box (for digital cable or digital satellite) or a viewing card (for Top Up TV). Some iDTVs also need a separate "CAM" adaptor to use Top Up TV.
